Özetler

Ali Sinan Sertöz (Bilkent): Arf Rings and Arf Closure

This talk will center around Cahit Arf's 1948 article on the multiplicity sequence of a curve branch. The problem was to decipher this sequence from the given local parametrization alone. For this purpose Arf developed the concept of canonical ring and canonical closure which were later labelled as Arf ring and Arf closure by Lipman, a student of Zariski, in 1971. I will explain all the concepts involved in the problem and its solution at a level suitable for an inquisitive advanced undergraduate student. Arf's original paper, which is in French, and its English translation can be reached on my web: http://sertoz.bilkent.edu.tr/arf.htm

Matthew Gelvin (Bilkent): Fusion systems and p-local finite groups

If G is a finite group and p a prime dividing the order of G, Sylow's Theorem tells us that G has a p-subgroup of largest possible order, and that such a group is essentially unique. This begins the study of the p-local structure of finite groups: That part of that group visible to a particular prime. The p-local study of finite groups has been an area of great interest to group theorists for decades; we organize these p-local data in a category called a fusion system. Puig realized that fusion systems do not actually require the existence of an ambient group, so once one has identified the key properties common to all fusion systems, one has introduced a new type of algebraic object, a "p-local finite group." These objects look like the p-parts of finite groups, but are more general in the sense that there may not actually exist a finite group that gives rise to a particular fusion system. In this talk we will introduce these concepts and give a brief overview of how fusion theory serves as a bridge between finite groups, algebraic topology, and representation theory.

Sinem Çelik onaran (Hacettepe): Knots and Open Book Decompositions: an introduction

In this talk, we will define knots and open book decompositions and give several examples. We will discuss their importance in the study of geometry and topology of 3-manifolds. We will list some references for the ones that are interested in further work.

Cihan Pehlivan (Atılım):Euclidean proof for prime numbers in certain arithmetic progressions.

In this talk we will discuss how we can extend Euclidean proof for prime numbers in arithmetic progressions and whether Dirichlet's theorem can be proven by using Euclidean arguments.

Sabri Umur Çetin(Bilkent):Subgroups of the

Free Group from a Topological Approach There is a formula from group theory known as Marshall Hall's formula which gives the number of subgroups of a free group of a finite index. We will be using a connection between covering spaces of a topological space, topological objects, and subgroups of its fundamental group, which are algebraic objects. Very basic knowledge of algebra and topology will be assumed during the talk, In order to keep the terminology consistent, the talk is planned to be in English.

Jülide Miray Özkan(İstanbul Üni): Basic concepts of model theory

It will be an introductory talk about the basic concepts in model theory such as language, structure, definability, etc.

Berkay Kebeci(Koç):Rubik's Cube Group

The Rubik’s Cube is a familiar toy from popular culture. However, from a group theorist's point of view it is a permutation group since it is a combination puzzle. In this talk, we will try to understand group structure of the Rubik’s Cube along with some other combination puzzles such as 15 puzzle. Supposedly, undergraduate group theory knowledge suffices to follow the talk.

Oğuz Gürerk(Boğaziçi):Outlier Analysis and Similarity Measures for Multivariate Two-Sample Tests

In statistics, an outlier is an observation point that is "distant" from other observations. Though the term outlier is often articulated in various fields, a consensus for a mathematical definition for an outlier has not been established yet, especially for the multivariate case. The purpose of this talk is to introduce mathematically rigorous definitions of types of outliers and to discuss, for example, density-based and cluster-based outlier detection methods.

Muhammet Furkan Merdan(Bilkent):Pell's equation and diophantine approximation

İlk olarak Pell Denklemleri'nde (x^2-d*y^2=1, d-nonsquare integer) bir tane çözümden sonsuz sayıda çözüm üretilebileceğini göstereceğim. Dirichlet's Diophantine Approximation teoremini kullanarak Pell Denklemi'nin her zaman çözümü olduğunu ispatlayıp bütün çözümlerin en küçük koordinatlı çözümden üretildiğini ispatlayarak da konuşmayı bitireceğim. Silvermann'ın "A Friendly Introduction to Number Theory" kitabı chapter 32-34'ü takip edeceğim.

Özlem Duygu Yılmaz (Msgsü): Tam Üç Parçalı Çizgelerin 5-Döngülere Ayrışımı

Bu konuşmada Maryam Mirzakhani ve E.S. Mahmoodian'nın, Mirzakhani Lisans öğreniminin başındayken birlikte yazdıkları bir makaleyi inceleyeceğiz.

Baran Zadeoğlu (Bilkent):Direct Product of integers(aka Baer-Specker group) is not free

It usually comes with a suprise that this proposition is true. It is a result established in the 1937 by Baer and further been worked on by Specker in more generality. Hence the name. In this talk I will briefly mention why this result is interesting and will prove the result. I will give the result by Specker that in fact all countable subgroups of this group is free but I won't attempt to prove it. This talk will require some understanding of basic group theory and basic set theory (cardinalities only). The notion of freeness will be introduced yet a previous understanding of freeness in the context of group or better yet in the sense of free modules might be helpful. The refenrance (which includes some future reading) for this talk is: http://www.math.uniduesseldorf.de/~schroeer/publications_pdf/infinite_product-1.pdf also the same proof is available in Turkish written by Ali Nesin. For Turkish version refer to either to the publicly available draft of his algebra book or a spesific issue, I fail to remember which, of the magazine Matematik Dünyası

Mehmet Vural (Abant): All topologies come from a family of 0-1 valued quasimetrics

Yunus C. Aybas (Bilkent):Social and Economic Networks

Network Theory is an application and modification of Graph Theory into Economics and Social Sciences. This field of Economics is concerned with the effects of existing ”network” structures on the social interactions and economic outcomes. This field of economics is built upon the realization that social interactions are, in many ways, the primary drivers of the behaviours and outcomes we observe in real life. First examples of network structures in economics studied the social networks on job market by Myers and Shultz (1951) and Rees and Shultz (1971), which served as important precursors to seminal work of Granovetters (1973, 1974). Jackson and Wolinsky (1996) provided a cost-benefit analysis over network structure. Examples can be given as job markets, education investments, and the question of whether or not to undertake criminal activity ? In real life, we observe that the networks of relations determines the structure of interactions. Under this scope it is an important question to ask ”which network structures are likely to emerge in a society ?”. Additionally, we ponder upon the questions of the effect of network structure on learning and diffusion in networks, or on the decision making by individuals who are influenced by their social neighbors. In fact, sometimes realistic structure of social networks posses a tension between optimality and stability. The notions of ”nearness” and ”centrality” became much more important in this concept. Economic Networ Furthermore, the study of ”Matchings” is concerned with optimal matchings of elements of two sets such that the elements of each set has a ”preference” ordering over the elements of the other set. This concept is well studied in the context of marriage matching of men and women and school admission problems. Through this paradigm, one can explore stable outcomes from complex starting points. This study of networks and matchings helps us, the economists, to discover the underlying effects of social structure.
